Tips for summertime training

Harrington Grove’s extensive network of shared pathways and enchanted bushland make it the ideal place to get outdoors and get fit. It is especially beautiful in summer, when the days are longer and the bush is vibrant and alive. However, it is crucial to exercise with caution during the warmer months to ensure you’re safe against the heat. Mark Molumby, Director of Grove Health & Fitness, has the following tips to beat the heat:

  • Always carry a bottle of water with you when walking, jogging or cycling in the heat, and ensure you’re hydrated before you set off
  • When possible exercise at dawn or dusk when the weather is cooler and the sun is less vigorous
  • Use insect repellents to avoid nasty bites
  • Wear lightweight clothes (workout clothes are best) to keep cooler
  • Slowly build up your summer workouts; your body needs to gradually adjust to your activity during the warmer months. Don’t push it without having built up to it
  • Recognise the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which range from headaches to high fever. Seek medical attention if necessary

“The most important thing is to use common sense in deciding what is safe and what may prove dangerous. Be sensible about what your body can tolerate, and enjoy it,” says Mark.
